Niquette Bay- Site 2: The Largest Tree

Welcome to Site 2!

Site 2 is found about a half-mile down the Ledges Trail in NBSP; the southwest corner of the hectare looks out into the scenic overlook over Mallett's Bay (picture above).

Our site was a fairly flat plot, with a few ledges and rocky outcroppings, especially toward the eastern boundary of the area. We divided the site into three stand covertypes: Red Oak-White Oak, Sugar Maple-Beech, and White Pine-Hemlock. There were also many shagbark hickories and ironwoods, as well as black oak, chinkapin oak, chestnut oak, red maple, basswood, and white ash. Our site had a vernal pool, a cave, and a lone butternut, and well as a large variety of fungi and herbaceous understory plants, like maidenhair fern, christmas fern, black trumpet mushrooms, and hepatica to name a few. Site 2 was similar to the rest of the eastern side of the Ledges Trail, and is a fairly good example of a more mature northeastern forest, with several distinct age classes within the forest canopy structure. We thoroughly enjoyed measuring, mapping and exploring this Site, and we hope this blog helps you do the same!
